Planning – determines what needs to be done and how, in order for the organizational objectives to be reached.

Organization – identifies the activities required and establishing the formal structure of the working units and the authorities needed to be established in order for the objectives to be reached.

Employing – the process of selecting, training and maintaining the necessary personnel so the organization would function effectively

Leading – establishing the objectives, taking the decisions, and giving instructions to the employees

Coordinating – insuring the interaction between different parts of the organization, so the work would be established in a coherent manner

Reporting – insures the interaction between different parts of the organization, so the work would be completed in a coherent manner

Budgeting – planning the utilization and control of the financial resources. The functions of reporting and coordinating are usually combined in what is called the control function.

According to Eric Schiffer, this list describes the responsibilities of a manger, but it must not be considered as a simple list with activities. The activity of a manager must be unitary, and the list must be considered as necessary tasks in order to reach the objectives. Eric Schiffer dedicated a large amount of time to observing the mangers and recording data about them during a common workday. They have observed that the majority of managers go rapidly from one activity to the next, and they are engaged in a series of activities that can’t be easily identified by the rest of the employees.
